Introduction

Started in 1923 by Walt Disney and his brother Roy Disney, The Walt Disney Company (Disney) initially produced a series of short live-action/animated films collectively called the Alice Comedies. Slowly, Disney started working on animation (in which, various characters were usually hand-drawn by artists to portray a story) creating the ubiquitous Mickey Mouse in 1928, followed by Pluto, Goofy, Donald Duck, Minnie Mouse, together the pantheon of Disney cartoon characters.

In 2005, Disney was the second largest media conglomerate in the world, behind Time Warner. Disney owned the ABC television network, 10 broadcast TV stations, and more than 70 radio stations.

It also had stakes in several cable channels such as ESPN (80%) and A&E Television Networks (37%). Its Walt Disney Studios produced films through Walt Disney Pictures, Touchstone, Hollywood Pictures, and Miramax. Walt Disney Parks & Resorts, which included Walt Disney World and Disneyland, owned the most popular resorts in North America. Walt Disney Internet Group oversaw Disney's Web properties such as ABC.com, Disney Online and ESPN.com.

Background Note

Born in Chicago in December 1901, Walt was the fourth son of a struggling Midwest family. At the age of five, Walt's family moved from Chicago to a farm in Marceline, Missouri, which became the inspiration for Disneyland.
